What is anxiety?
Many people live with underlying Anxiety and have done so at varying levels for a long time.
Anxiety can exist quietly. It can create obvious and debilitating physical conditions like digestive issues, breathing problems, heart palpitations, headaches, muscular tightness, nervous system responses. Anxiety can be the underlying issue behind chronic health conditions. Anxiety can create behavioural imbalances like anger, volatility, shyness and introversion. Some people camouflage their anxiety with attention-seeking or over-compensating behaviours.
Some people feel anxiety in certain situations and others have a constant/chronic sense of anxiety which can be experienced as overwhelm or panic attacks by some.
Anxiety is an automatic response. It troubles us because we seem to have no control over it. Whatever area of life it shows up in, it doesn’t feel good. It prevents us from doing the things we want to and being the person, we would prefer to be.
Prolonged periods of emotional stress and fear cause feelings of anxiety. It is an automatic response of the mind and body to create a STOP to the rising stress in the body and a state of fear. It acts as a pressure valve release.
Our mind has a primeval setting to ensure our survival in any & all circumstances. So, it always takes us towards what it perceives to be pleasure, comfort, and familiarity. It also alerts us and warns us of what it perceives to be dangerous, unsafe, and unfamiliar. This is our subconscious mind, the part of our mind that rules our life. The part that programs us to behave the way we do in more than 95% of our daily life. It’s the habit mind that makes us work on autopilot most of the time.
Anxiety is a sign of underlying trauma. Trauma can be a singular event in our past that put us in a state of significant stress and fear. Trauma can also be a state of long-term emotional stress and fear that never gets expressed or resolved, as may occur in our childhood.
In either circumstance, the mind helps us cope, adapt, survive the extreme, excessive, and ongoing stress and fear. It does so by removing it from our conscious mind and putting it in our subconscious mind in the form of beliefs, imprints and impressions about self and what to expect in life. Even our level of faith and trust in what we may call God, the universe, our higher intelligence is imprinted on our subconscious mind. This program then just runs on automatic perpetually in our life.
Situations and circumstances in our life can act as triggers. When the external stimuli of stress, uncertainty, upheaval, change occurs, we have to deal it. Such situations can cause our anxiety to become activated and become unmanageable. Become unbearable. Our ability to cope is diminished.
